Second hand bike buying guide: what to check before you pay
Updated 20 October 2026. 4 minute read.
A used bike can cost half the price of a new one and ride just as well, if you know what to look for.
Choose the right type and size
Hybrid and commuter bikes suit mixed roads and cycle lanes, road bikes are for speed, and mountain bikes suit trails. Frame size matters more than brand. Ask for the frame size in centimetres and check it against the brand's size chart.
Check the bike
Look for cracks or dents in the frame near the welds. Spin the wheels and check they run straight. Pedal, change through the gears and test the brakes. Check the chain, cassette and brake pads for wear.
Worn parts are fixable, but they are a reason to negotiate.
Avoid stolen bikes
Ask for proof of purchase and the serial number (usually under the bottom bracket). Be wary if it has been scratched off. A very cheap price and a seller who will not meet at their home are warning signs.
