How we fight scams
Scams are the biggest worry for anyone buying or selling online. This is what we do about them, and what we are still building.
What we do now
Every message is checked for scam signs
We scan messages for bank details, requests for deposits or payment in advance, couriers and escrow services, gift cards, crypto, links, phone numbers, email addresses and requests to move to WhatsApp or Telegram.
New accounts are held to the strictest rules
In their first week, accounts cannot send those things at all. Older accounts can send some of them, but the other person sees a clear warning, and the most serious ones are held for review before they are delivered.
Warnings appear right where you need them
If a message looks risky you see a warning under that message, not just a general notice somewhere else. While you type, we also tell you if your message would be stopped.
Listings are checked too
The same scam checks run on every listing title and description, so phone numbers, links and payment requests cannot be slipped in there. A banned words list blocks prohibited wording, and duplicate listings are refused.
Reports go to a real person
You can report any message, listing or user, and block anyone. Our moderators review every report. A listing reported by several established members is taken down for review straight away.
Email verification before anything else
You cannot log in, list or message until your email address is confirmed.
Your contact details stay private
Messages stay on SellNow.ie. We never show your email address, and a phone number only appears if you choose to show one.
We never handle your money
There is no payment step on SellNow.ie, so there is no "payment link" and no one is ever asked to pay through the site. You pay in person when you collect.
Traders must say they are traders
Anyone selling as part of a business must register as a trader and show their business name and address. If a private seller lists a lot of items in a month, we ask them to register as a trader before they can list more.
No throwaway email addresses
Temporary email services are refused at sign-up, which stops the bulk fake accounts scammers rely on.
Example listings are clearly labelled
Any listing that is only there to show how the site works carries an "Example listing" label and cannot be messaged.
What we are building next
- Bot checks on sign-up, login and messaging.
- Phone number verification, so verified accounts unlock fuller messaging.
- Checks for copied photos and for prices far below normal.
No system catches everything
Our checks cut down scams, but they cannot replace your own caution. Never pay in advance by bank transfer to someone you have not met, meet in a public place and check the item before you pay. Read the full safety advice.
