Most deals go smoothly. A few simple habits keep it that way.
We scan every message for scam signs and apply strict rules to new accounts. See what we do to stop scams.
Four rules to follow
Never pay in advance
Do not send money by bank transfer to someone you have not met. Pay in person, on collection.
Meet in public
Pick a busy place in daylight, like a shop car park or a garda station forecourt, and tell someone where you are going.
Check before you pay
Test electronics, inspect the item and ask for paperwork on vehicles and machinery.
Keep chat on the site
Be careful if someone pushes you to move to WhatsApp or email straight away.
Common scams
- Fake courier or deposit requests
- A genuine buyer never needs your bank login or a code sent to your phone.
- Overpayment
- A buyer sends too much and asks you to refund the difference. The first payment later fails.
- Phishing links
- Never click a link to "confirm" or "release" a payment.
- Prices that look too good
- A new phone at half price usually means a scam or stolen goods.
Selling vehicles and big items
Ask to see the registration certificate, service history and NCT details, and check the seller matches the documents. For machinery, check for finance owed and agree handover in writing.
