How to buy a used car in Ireland: a checklist

Updated 20 October 2026. 6 minute read.

A used car is likely the biggest second hand purchase you will make. A methodical check before you pay can save you thousands.

Check who you are buying from

Find out whether the seller is a private individual or a trader. A trader must follow consumer law, which gives you stronger rights, and on SellNow.ie traders are labelled and show their business details.

For a private sale, ask to see photo ID and make sure the name matches the owner on the vehicle registration certificate.

Check the documents

Ask to see the vehicle registration certificate, the NCT certificate and the service history. Check the chassis number on the car matches the paperwork.

Look at the NCT history and mileage trail where you can. A history check will flag outstanding finance, write-offs and mileage discrepancies, which is worth the small cost.

Inspect the car

See the car in daylight and dry weather. Check for rust, panel gaps, uneven tyre wear, leaks under the car and warning lights on the dashboard.

Start the engine from cold, listen for unusual noises and check the heating, windows, lights and air conditioning.

Take a test drive

Make sure you are insured to drive it. Test it on different roads, including a faster stretch, and listen for knocks, clunks and vibrations. Check the brakes pull evenly.

Agree the price and pay safely

Negotiate based on what you find. Pay by a traceable method once you have the keys and documents. Never pay a deposit before you have seen the car. Complete the change of ownership promptly and arrange motor tax and insurance before you drive it away.
